If you’re a builder, you know that running your own business ain’t easy!
There’s so much going on at any one time, and you’ve got to oversee all the handy work, plus the day to day running of the business. So how can you grow If there’s not enough time in the day?
Well, here’s 5 common mistakes builders do that stop their business from moving forward.
1. DOING IT ALL
Remember that saying there’s no “I” in Team? learn to become a master delegator. Learn what your strengths are and what you’re not so good at that you can hire someone to do. Letting go of the smaller menial tasks to take on looking at the bigger picture could change your life and your business.
2. FAILING TO HAVE A DECENT SMARTPHONE
Ok guys it’s now 2017 and more than 65% of shopping, searching and socializing is done on our mobile phones. In order to get in the game you have to have a decent device that will be as handy as your hammer in your day to day life! Having a good phone, that can help you make ‘on the fly’ social media posts, take excellent photos, check emails, and have simple automation, like “auto text reply” as the swipe of a sawdusted finger, when you’re too busy to answer the phone.
3. BAD PHOTOS
Ok, we see this all the time. Let’s be honest, bad Photos don’t do your work justice. Now that you have your ahhh-Mazing smartphone, learn how to make your work stand out amongst the rest with great images.
For Social Media: Before you take a shot, make sure there’s good lighting, make sure the sun is behind you and shining on where you want to shoot and don’t be afraid to stage a shot by putting a few tools in place, or removing rubbish. Also, try taking a few social shots of your guys at work for social-currency purposes - enjoying their job and the process of building someones dream home!
For WebSite & Facebook Marketing: Getting a professional photographer to come in and shoot your finished product is worth its weight in GOLD. Creating a portfolio of glossy, high-resolution images will be valuable for years to come and will be crucial to any marketing you do in the future; for print and online.
4. NOT KEEPING A DATABASE OF PAST & POTENTIAL CLIENTS
Let us face it. It’s easy to do a job, shake hands with the client, then get on your merry way and never return, due to the fact you lost your phone, or you wrote their number down on a beer coaster and forgot to put it in your phone or any number of things. Having a SOLID EMS (Email Marketing System) will help you stay on top of you Database, support regular communication and help build a long-lasting relationship with your clients. Not only that, you’re almost guaranteed to get repeat business, because you are the first person on their mind when they think of building something.
5. LACK OF DECENT WEBSITE
Your website is your shop front, this is the place people go to first to suss you out. When you’re mum told you, “don’t judge a book by its cover”, she knew that was morally correct, however, we all tend to do it as a force of habit. So when a potential customer comes to your website, you want it to represent you and your business in the best possible light. You want them to be so overjoyed by what they see that they subscribe to your list straight away, and you can start communicating with them about how awesome your building company is.
Also, making sure your website, social media and EMS Systems are all talking to each other and flowing seamlessly into each other. This is a great way to save you time, and money in the long run!
